Report about the College (presented by the Principal during his welcome address)
St. Anthony’s College Extension, Byndihati is an educational initiative of the Salesians of Don Bosco in order to cater to the needs of the young people of this region. Realising the need of the hour and the desire of the people of Byndihati, the dream of starting a college became a reality. The Foundation Stone for this academic block was laid and blessed on 16th May, 2015 by Rev. Fr. George Maliekal, the then Provincial of Shillong Province. The college was inaugurated on 23rd June, 2015 in Khliehriat Hr. Sec. School campus in the presence of eminent leaders from the Government, the Church and the civil society with Rev. Fr. Paul Dayo Passah as its first principal in-charge. The college was in Khliehriat for two academic years. Rev. Fr. Joby Joseph succeeded Fr. Paul Passah.
In May 2017, with Rev. Fr. Kenny Pakma as Principal In-charge, the college was shifted to this present campus and this academic block was inaugurated on 16th December, 2017. We hope to complete the next wing of this academic block this year itself.
Currently, the college has 7 departments, namely, Commerce, Education, English, Khasi, History, Political Science and Sociology. With much confidence I must say that academically the college is in a good position. This 2nd batch of students, for instance, Commerce and English Departments have passed with 100% results; Political Science 77%, Education 75% and those who passed from Sociology Department 60% passed with 1st division, the rest with 2nd division and only 1 student with third division. Thanks to the hard work and collaboration of the management, the faculty and the students.
Along with the academic emphasis, our focus has been the all-round development of our students. Besides the talents exhibited on stage this afternoon, we stress on communication skills, leadership, personality development and the like. Diversity is another blessing for our college – the 450 students are from Meghalaya, Arunachal P., Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, West Bengal and from the neighbouring countries Bangladesh and Myanmar.
In the area of infrastructure, if this academic block has come up and has stood so tall and firmly it is only by the grace of the Almighty God and through the hard work of the Salesian Province of Shillong under the leadership of Rev. Fr. George Maliekal as Provincial, Fr. James Thyrniang as Economer and the cooperation of all the fathers and brothers of the province. Currently, we have Fr. Paul Olphindro Lyngkot as Provincial under whose guidance we march ahead.
This short report will be incomplete without mentioning the immense contribution made by St. Anthony’s College Shillong; currently under the leadership of Rev. Fr. (Dr.) Joby Joseph as the Rector and Rev. Br. (Dr.) Albert L. Dkhar as the Principal. Their keen interest and continuous support is our strength and inspiration.
